Taking a break from beauty for a bit to muse about blogging for money. I’ve just signed up with Smorty.com which is a blog advertising portal. Here are a few tips for anyone wanting to incorporate blog advertising into your website or blog.
- Try to fit the ads into the general theme of your site, so it doesn’t stand out like a sore thumb. I don’t sometimes follow this basic rule of thumb because some topics just cannot be merged no matter how hard you try. Where I can, I keep to my site theme, but where I can’t, I try to stick as closely as I can. It helps if you have a general sort of site that allows you to write anything you want, but if you have a niche site, it’s a lot harder to blend advertisements. Just do your best but don’t make it contrived.
- Allow ads to stand out. Some ads need to stand out to be effective. Its like when you watch television. If all ads were to blend in with the movie, nothing will grab your attention. So, what television ads do is try to stand out and remain memorable and blog ads aim to do the same. It doesn’t have to be jarring if tastefully done.
- Don’t forget the reason you set up a site/blog. Its easy to be carried away when you get paid for blogging, but do think of the reason you set up your site. In most cases, you would have nurtured the site, ad-free for at least 90 days before being accepted by blog advertisers. This is the period when you get your readership following and you don’t want to drive them away.
These are some tips I try to follow and I hope they help someone. And now, on to our regular scheduled programme!
